Fuel Filters

Curious to know more about how the fuel filter in your Ford works? This filter piece is essential, and one that is needed for the healthy and long lasting performance of your engine.

How Car Fuel Filters Work

For your engine to burn clean fuel, it must have a filter that protects the engine from byproducts like metal and dirt particles. These contaminants can collect in the fuel lines and pump, which can clog over time causing horrible performance for your car's engine. The fuel filter design blocks this from happening and the filter media can be routinely changed over the years or mileage.

Similar to the oil filter in your engine, the fuel filter has a synthetic cotton cellulose fiber material that is packed into a tightly sealed cannister that connects to your fuel lines. The filter media collects contaminants, but over time can become oversaturated and clogged.

Car Symptoms for Bad or Clogged Fuel Filter

If you've noticed fuel odors after starting your Ford, or have experienced a lag in acceleration or a drop in fuel mileage, you should have your fuel filters exchanged for new ones. This could be every 20,000 or 40,000 miles depending on your vehicle. Always double check your owner's manual or consult with a Ford technician to see when you should change your fuel filters.
